Simone Gbagbo Requests Amnesty for Husband Ahead of Ivory Coast Elections: Simone Gbagbo, the former first lady of the Ivory Coast, has requested that President Alassane Ouattara give her husband, Laurent Gbagbo, amnesty ahead of the upcoming presidential elections in October. Ms. Gbagbo has requested that her husband be considered eligible to run in the presidential election and be given a diplomatic passport.

Laurent Gbagbo and his wife were both charged over violence in 2010 and 2011 when Mr. Gbagbo refused to cede power after being defeated in an election. Gbagbo was arrested in 2011 and charged at the International Criminal Court with four counts of crimes against humanity, namely rape, murder, other inhumane acts or in the alternative attempted murder, and persecution. The trial resulted in his acquittal last year. Mr. Gbagbo was conditionally released by the ICC, and is currently being hosted by Belgium under conditions including his agreeing to return to The Hague for an appeal by the Prosecution.
