27 October 2020 – UNSMIL announces the launch of political dialogue amidst the signing of a permanent, nationwide ceasefire in Libya
UNSMIL announces the launch of political dialogue amidst the signing of a permanent, nationwide ceasefire in Libya: The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has announced the launch of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF), following the signing of a permanent ceasefire agreement in the country.
The LPDF aims to be a fully inclusive intra-Libyan political dialogue with varied geographic, ethnic, political, tribal, and social representation. It aims to generate consensus on a unified governance framework and arrangements that will lead to national elections in the shortest possible timeframe, to restore Libya’s sovereignty and the democratic legitimacy of Libyan institutions.
The ceasefire, signed on 23 October 2020, has been welcomed by the UN as a critical step in ending the conflict and addressing the humanitarian situation in Libya. Supporters of the UN-recognised Government in Tripoli have been under siege for months, following an offensive by forces of the rival administration of the Libyan National Army, led by Commander Khalifa Haftar.
